Jace isn't pleased to be visiting the Institute or meeting with a Shadowhunter. It's been a very long time since he spent any effort or time visiting his old life. A Shadowhunter turned Vampire was not a popular Vampire. But Raphael needed someone to stand in for him and had this whole convincing speech about how Jace had been a Shadowhunter so who better to mediate. Blah. Blah. Blah. Jace had rolled his eyes and given Raphael the usual bored expression before finally agreeing. It would cost Raphael. He just hadn't decided what he wanted.
He was still debating the price when he was escorted through the Institute and left in a room to wait. Opening drawers, touching everything, sitting in the chair behind the desk with his feet on a stack of very important papers. Trying to imagine the person who chose a desk over fighting demons. People in charge were so boring.

Date: 2017-07-22 05:36 am (UTC)From:Raphael's reasoning made sense. If Jace was a Herondale, then he knew about the Clave, Nephilim culture, and all the quirks that sometimes hindered relations between Shadowhunters and Downworlders. But that didn't help if the vampire sent to the Institute was going to tear apart Alec's office and try to do... whatever Jace was doing between attempts at insulting him. "So far your behavior is similar to my brother's." Drumming his fingers on his arm, he tried to keep his tone even if Jace had no right to try to tear through his attempts at making a difficult situation tolerable. You might be Raphael's envoy, but that doesn't mean you get to make comments about how I live my life."

Date: 2017-07-22 06:06 am (UTC)From:"How old is your brother?" He asked, curious about the boy Alec had mentioned more than once. "Maybe I should be having this meeting with him. We could set paper airplanes on fire and send them sailing off the roof of the Institute like fireflies in the night." He smiled teasingly at Alec and began twirling the pen between his fingers again.

Date: 2017-07-23 04:08 am (UTC)From:"Ten." It couldn't hurt to give that detail when Max was away from the Institute. Even if he wasn't overseas, the information was easy to find if Jace asked the right person. "Please don't. We have enough problems keeping him from burning the Institute down." Alec doubted that Jace would listen but at least he'd tried. "He might also try to stake you. He's eager to prove himself even if he really doesn't mean to offend anyone."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-23 04:53 am (UTC)From:With Alec....he had no idea why he was making such an effort to behave.
"Your little brother will not offend me by staking me. And I promise not to encourage him to set fire to anything. In fact, I promise he will never know I exist."
Jace looked over at Alec's chair and then up at Alec. "I won't tell anyone if you sit down."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-23 05:33 am (UTC)From:"If he staked you, there wouldn't be anything left of you to take offensive." Max wouldn't do it. He might talk about it but no one would let him have a weapon yet. "You can see him." He wasn't sure why he'd said that when he wasn't sure if he could trust this vampire.
No, he could trust Jace. Raphael wouldn't send a vampire in his place if he was dangerous and Raphael understood the importance of family.
"Are you giving me permission to sit in my own office?" Alec should have sounded annoyed but instead he was amused by Jace's quick changes in temperament. At least he was for now. Sitting down at his desk, he ignored the disarray of paperwork scattered over its surface. "Did Raphael just want us to meet or is there official business that I need to look into?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-23 05:58 am (UTC)From:"I assume he simply wanted us to meet if you weren't already prepared for an actual business meeting." He started twirling the pen again and smiled. "If I said you were making me nervous hovering like you were would you believe me?"
So Alec responded better to less seductive vampire and more sincerity. He hadn't been sincere in a long time so this was going to be a bit difficult. Jace was worried he'd forgotten how to be....Jace. Not completely. To be fair he had been arrogant and impulsive long before he became a vampire. But he had other qualities Alec might like.
Kissing. He was a great kisser.
Maybe he shouldn't start with that one.
no subject
Date: 2017-07-23 06:47 am (UTC)From:"Probably not," he answered, smiling wryly at the question. "I doubt anything makes you nervous. And you had to know I wouldn't harm a guest or someone that Raphael recommended." But maybe his lurking had caused a bad impression... like Jace trashing his office had. "I don't really know how to entertain visitors," he admitted. "I think my siblings got all the extrovertedness of the Lightwood family."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 12:27 am (UTC)From:Jace didn't really flirt with anyone either.
Not anymore.
At least, not until Alec walked through the door.
Still twirling the pen, Jace looked up from Alec's desk where his thoughts had pulled him away, and instantly knew. He was in trouble. It wasn't a true smile. Not one without boundaries and full of pure happiness. But it was a smile. Jace didn't even notice he'd dropped the pen.
"You're doing fine." His eyes bright again, Jace leaned forward and rearranged a few papers neatly on Alec's desk. "Extroverts are either hiding more than they care to admit or they put themselves all out there, no secrets, proud of who they are. But someone who is careful or isn't as open is sort of like waiting out a bud to bloom. It's worth the wait to see the flower."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 01:33 am (UTC)From:Arching an eyebrow when Jace dropped the pen, he wondered what could have caused that reaction. He hadn't said anything interesting or shocking. "It doesn't feel like it." But he had to be doing something right since Jace didn't seem annoyed and he was attempting to straighten up Alec's desk. Setting one stack of reports aside to deal with later, he almost blurted out the first question that came to mind when Jace mentioned extroverts.
Jace seemed to be that type. Was he hiding something or proud of who he was?
Ignoring the question, his smile became slightly more genuine. "Are you saying that I'm a pretty flower waiting to bloom?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 02:38 am (UTC)From:Where did his pen go? It took a moment for him to find it on the floor, but as soon as he had it in hand he was twirling it between his fingers again. For a moment. Then he stopped and held it out for Alec to take.
"Pretty isn't the word I would use."
Alec had no idea how difficult it was for him to stay where he was instead of crawling across the desk. He wanted Alec to take the pen, give him the chance to touch his fingers with his own. And when Alec smiled again Jace nearly did end up in his lap.
Restraint wasn't his strength.
"I'd say you've already bloomed."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 04:31 am (UTC)From:Trying to hide his amusement over Jace chasing after the pen, he managed to keep his expression politely interested while he scrambled to pick it up. Taking the pen, he tried to figure out what was going on with the vampire. He seemed to be off balance but Alec hadn't done anything to cause that. "That's because I'm not pretty. Izzy's the one who deserves that description."
That was another reason why Jace's description didn't make sense. "I'm not sure why you'd think that."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 05:04 am (UTC)From:Which is exactly why he was a vampire.
A vampire who had somehow managed to screw up an amazing and romantic thought process. He was suppose to say something about Alec being the bud who was waiting for the right person to share himself with.
"Why I would think you've already bloomed?"
Yes. Jace. Pay attention. You called him a bud and said you wouldn't call him pretty.
To hell with restraint. Jace was over the desk and sitting in front of Alec, his legs on either side of him rather than actually being in his lap the way Jace had wanted. Some restraint, then.
"Because I've never met anyone like you. I think you're beautiful, but you're so much more than anyone has ever known. Alec Lightwood."
He leaned forward, bright eyes wandering over Alec's face, noticing the way his eyelashes were so dark and thick. Like his hair.

Date: 2017-07-24 05:35 am (UTC)From:He'd been stupid. He'd assumed that a friend of Raphael's was safe because Raphael was safe.
The chair had barely rolled back when Jace planted himself on the desk. He would have looked like a kid sitting there if his expression didn't remind him of something he'd seen at the Hotel that he'd carefully pretended not to notice.
Predatory but not like Alec was dinner. More like he was something tasty that Jace might be curious about tasting.
Forcing himself to relax into his chair, he waited to see what Jace would do. When no attack came, he realized the vampire's actions weren't meant to frighten him or a play for dominance. "Most people are grateful that they never meet someone like me." That wasn't what Jace wanted to hear but it was the truth. "I'm not sure why you'd think I'm beautiful. Just walking in you would have seen a dozen people better looking than me."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 05:53 am (UTC)From:He was careful to keep his hands to himself, but he couldn't stop the unconscious lick against his bottom lip. He wanted to taste Alec, but not in the ways Alec might think he did. Okay. So he wanted to taste Alec in all the ways he could if he were allowed, but not from hunger.
"You'll most likely feel grateful when I finally leave your office." The thought actually hurt. Enough to make him sit up so Alec could relax a little more. He smiled and leaned back on the desk. "I didn't see any mirrors so, no, I didn't notice anyone better looking than you."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-24 06:30 am (UTC)From:"No, you're not." He wasn't like the other Downworlders Alec had met either. He was actually entertaining in a way that most people weren't and he didn't care that Alec wasn't charming or politically minded.
"I'll be happy when my office is back in order but because you left." Which was strange since he usually only tolerated Izzy and Max. Everyone else usually wore down on him, expecting him to be social in ways that he didn't always understand. Jace just wanted to tease and annoy... and maybe bite.
This was a terrible idea. Why had Raphael sent Jace to the Institute? "Is there enough room in my office for you, me, and your ego?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-25 02:56 am (UTC)From:"I can tell my ego to take a hike." If it meant Alec would let him come back he'd check his ego at the door. "And we could start again. With introductions. Although, I doubt I'll get the same reaction the second time I tell you my name."
Jace hooked the chair with his boot and pulled Alec closer, leaning forward so he could see all the colors that made Alec's eyes so beautiful "Jace Herondale."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-25 05:13 am (UTC)From:Jace was right about telling Alec his name again but not about his reaction. As he began to reintroduce himself, Jace rolled the desk chair closer. He barely managed to keep from reaching for the weapon stowed in his desk. His hand curled around the arms of his chair but that was the only obvious sign of shock that he allowed himself.
Keeping still when Jace leaned closer, he mentally headdesked when he realized he was blushing. "Alec Lightwood." Sitting so close, with Jace studying him so intently, he couldn't help but be transfixed by the colors of Jace's eyes. It was something he'd never seen before, the difference between gold and blue almost making his breath catch. "Did your eyes change after or were they... like ..." The blush brightened and there wasn't any possibility that he could be less obvious in his interest. "It's - uh - rare trait."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-25 05:35 am (UTC)From:He didn't blame him for reacting. Jace was a predator. A Downworlder. He vaguely wondered about Alec's fighting abilities and had a sudden urge to spar with him. He'd missed that, too.
Jace almost missed the blush entirely, the romantic part of him would say he was literally lost in Alec's eyes, but he caught that slight hitch in Alec's breathing and realized it was because Alec was also getting lost.
His ego would have responded with 'I'm a rare find', but Jace was caught up in a war with himself. To kiss or not to kiss.
Considering the way Alec was still guarded and unsure of Jace's intentions he decided it was best if he remained just within kissing distance without actually kissing Alec.
"They were like this before I turned." And before he could stop himself he added. "You can ask me anything, Alec."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-25 10:52 pm (UTC)From:Jace was attractive even without the attempts at charm. Alec knew he wasn't always discrete in his preferences, but he usually didn't act like he was potentially smitten by a pretty face or, in this case, pretty eyes.
He knew Jace hadn't bespelled him. The encanto felt a certain way and this wasn't like that. This was simply Jace. "They're - uh - " At least he stopped himself from saying Jace's eyes were pretty. "You shouldn't tell me that. I don't really have any tact."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 04:21 am (UTC)From:"Ask me anything, Alec." He had the pen again, twirling it between his fingers, slightly smug that he'd taken it back so easily. He wanted Alec to know him, not be afraid of him. This Shadowhunter he'd just met who had made him want to be known again. Pacing back and forth in front of Alec's desk, he added. "I haven't simply...talked. To anyone. Not honestly or sincerely. In a long time."
Stopping, he sat down in the chair opposite of Alec. "You were going to say something about my eyes. We could always start there."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 04:43 am (UTC)From:Despite his attempts at control, Alec smiled as Jace decided on a more acrobatic way of removing himself from the desk. The grace could have been because of being a vampire, but he recognized a hint of Shadowhunter training.
Realizing that he was actually enjoying Jace's games, he tried to understand what was going on. Was Jace using the encanto on him?
He knew what that felt like. Nothing was clouding his thoughts. Nothing was taking away his free will. His runes and training would make it difficult for a vampire to enter his mind without effort. Jace wasn't trying to bespell him. He was just being... friendly?
That was what it seemed like but Alec knew that he wasn't the first choice most would make if they wanted a friend. He was too blunt. Too stubborn. Too... all the traits that Izzy proclaimed were a disadvantage.
Wondering why the pen was so interesting to the vampire, he rolled his eyes when Jace suggested that he compliment him as his first question. Leaning forward on the desk, he considered what he could ask. Anything related to why he was a vampire or why he wanted to be sincere with Alec seemed off limits no matter what Jace said. Instead, he decided on something simpler. "What's your favorite book?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 04:57 am (UTC)From:He pointed the pen at Alec. "You hesitated before asking. Why?"
He could guess the answer, but he wanted to hear it from Alec. He wanted to know what Alec was thinking and why he was thinking it. The pen was twirling again, effortlessly and without conscious thought for the action.
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 05:30 am (UTC)From:For some reason the idea of Jace and death made him uncomfortable. He'd thought about it with Raphael, knowing that the vampire was younger than he acted, but the idea of Jace's death wasn't pleasant.
"Most vampires stick to things from the era they're most comfortable with. You don't." It was more of an observation that his tone implied. It was still a curiosity, making him wonder about the being that Raphael had sent.
Arching an eyebrow to imply that he was unimpressed with the pen usage, Alec shrugged. "The question I was going to ask was rude. Even if you'll let me ask anything there are some boundaries I shouldn't cross."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 06:06 am (UTC)From:Catching the look, Jace closed his hand around the pen. And then he looked away from Alec. He had hoped Alec would want to know something. For a moment when he was trying so hard not to kiss Alec he thought Alec might be feeling the same. Trying hard not to kiss him.
"Ask me another easy question then." When he looked at Alec again the disappointment was carefully hidden away. He wanted to be sitting on the desk in front of him, close enough to feel his breath on his lips. He wanted to know why, after all these years, he suddenly wanted to talk to someone about everything, even the difficult things Alec was being careful to avoid. "I don't want to make you uncomfortable. It's important. I don't know why when I've spent my entire existence intentionally making everyone around me uncomfortable." If by uncomfortable he means want to kill him in horrible ways.
no subject
Date: 2017-07-26 06:59 am (UTC)From:"I doubt there's any easy questions with you." His tone was teasing, one that he rarely used with anyone except Izzy. Humming a thoughtful sound, he considered the 'easy' questions, and then decided to ask one that was important to him although few people would realize it or knew of his interest. Alec was about to ask when Jace tried to reassure him about the subjects that were allowed. "Jace, asking those questions would make you uncomfortable, not me. I didn't say it because I didn't want to offend you." Or hurt him, but he wasn't sure if Jace would believe that. "You don't exactly make me uncomfortable." Not in the way that Jace meant at least.
Not wanting Jace to think he was avoiding the offer of asking questions, he returned to the one he'd been about to ask. "What's your favorite type of music?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-27 03:02 am (UTC)From:"You mean Raphael actually sent me to do something good?" He certainly had failed so far. He doubted Raphael would be surprised how little good he'd accomplished so far. In fact, Jace was starting to think Alec was too good for him. Way too good for someone like him.
The problem with being a vampire wasn't the blood lust. It was having everything about yourself intensified. Good and bad. So when Alec said he didn't exactly make him uncomfortable Jace was kicking himself for being discouraged, even for a moment. What was he thinking? Alec may be too good for him, but he was also attractive, smart, and compassionate.
Rubbing at his bottom lip, he considered the question. "Everything. Except most rap and a lot of the more current pop the kids seem to enjoy. Classical. No country. Too...whiny. Rock, hard rock, classic rock. Mundanes really are brilliant when it comes to creating music."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-27 05:58 am (UTC)From:Alec just wasn't sure what Raphael was thinking.
Realizing that he was staring at Jace a little too intently, he glanced away before he could embarrass himself. Why was he reacting like this? He'd been around dozens of attractive men. He'd been around vampires who had actually tried to bespell him. There was no reason for Alec to act like this with Jace.
"The kids seem to enjoy." No matter how much he tried to hold back his laughter, he snickered over the phrasing. "You sound like an old man." Which might be true but it didn't match the attitude Jace had been projecting. "You forgot about jazz and the blues." There were other genres too but those were ones that Alec would have added to that list. "They are. I envy that about their lives." Which wasn't something he'd normally admit, but he didn't think Jace would tell anyone that Alec had a secret interest in music.
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 02:06 am (UTC)From:Alec looked away and Jace wanted to follow, force him to look at him and to look into Alec's eyes, like before. So he did. This time he moved casually, getting up from the chair and walking around the side of Alec's desk. He didn't try to sit in his lap or invade his personal space. He leaned back against the desk next to Alec and laughed when Alec laughed, calling him an old man.
"I like to think of myself as forever 18." He defended, still smiling. "Billie Holiday. She's my favorite."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 02:47 am (UTC)From:Noticing that Jace had started to move, Alec pushed back his chair so that he could easily look up at his guest. "Was that how old you were when you became a Downworlder?" It still was a tactless question but it seemed less harsh than mentioning death or vampirism. "I have a few LPs, but I haven't had time lately to add to my collection."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 03:44 am (UTC)From:His smile softened, became more thoughtful, but he was enjoying their conversation too much now to let it falter into something deeper.
"Yes."
Simple answer for a simple question.
"You have LP's? Not CD's or one of those iPods everyone is carrying around? Actual LP's?" This was probably the greatest surprise yet.
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 04:10 am (UTC)From:He was surprised that Jace answered the question and knew that he shouldn't ask anything else related to that particular subject. "I have actual LPs. And CDs and an iPod. I collect whatever I can but vinyl is best." Few people knew about his collection. Izzy and the store owners that he purchased his most prized albums from but no one else. His parents would have thought it was a childish hobby and tried to ruin it just like they had when he asked to learn to play an instrument. "Do you dislike technology or just prefer the sound of records?"
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 04:23 am (UTC)From:He definitely hoped for the chance to spar with Alec. In more than one method. And with that thought Jace couldn't help letting his gaze wander. Alec was wearing too many clothes, but he could imagine his Shadowhunter physique and the runes that decorated his body just fine.
"I love technology. But nothing captures the true sound of beautiful music the way vinyl does. I can't even find words to describe it and I'm very articulate. Most of the time. I'd love to see your collection."
no subject
Date: 2017-07-28 03:48 pm (UTC)From:Noticing that Jace was giving him a strange look, he was going to ask about but Jace mentioned music. "I understand it. I don't know why it sounds better but it does. Technology makes it portable but it doesn't always preserve the quality of the sound or the emotion that was part of creating the music." Not quite sure what to say to that request, Alec realized he was starting to blush. Why was he reacting like that. It was a completely innocent request... one that would offend most Shadowhunters in the Institute but it wasn't improper. "I'd like to show it to you sometime. Do you have a collection or is that some special vampire secret I can't know about?"
no subject
Date: 2017-08-01 01:48 am (UTC)From:"I travel too much to keep a collection, but if I had one...it would fill an entire room. I'd need a room for music and one for books."
That would require a home he thought to himself.
